Swimming Pool Safety

Now that we’re in the heart of summer, there’s one activity that’s more popular to do than hosting backyard barbeques—swimming! One of the most important things to highlight when it comes to swimming pools is safety. Every year, many people (including children and adults) are injured in or near a swimming pool, which is why it is of the utmost importance that we make safety a priority. Here are a few measures you can take to ensure safety in and around your swimming pool.

Fence in the swimming pool

Before you erect a fence around the pool, it’s a good idea to check with your city and county for local building codes first. Some areas may have certain height requirements that differ from other cities. In addition to height, fences should not have any footholds or grips that allow for climbing. Move any furniture away from the fence to prevent young children from making any attempts to scale the fence. Lastly, make sure the gate to the pool cannot be easily opened by a small child. Most fence designs have self-closing spring hinges and self-locking latches that are approximately 60 inches off the ground.

Consider all access points to the pool

Sometimes having a gate around the swimming pool isn’t a feasible option. In this case, you will want to look at all the different access points to the swimming pool, from the patio door, garage, backyard fence, and even the upstairs bedroom windows. Install childproof locks on doors and windows. For doors, it’s best practice to install any locks 60 inches above the floor.

Safety around the pool deck

Regardless whether the pool is in use, it’s important to always keep the deck clear of any toys, floaties, clothing, furniture, and electrical devices. Remind everyone to not run along the deck and to be careful when diving into the pool. Always be vigilant in keeping an eye on any activity happening within the pool.

Safety in the pool

One of the biggest components of swimming pool safety includes maintaining and replacing all drains, drain covers, anti-entrapment grates, and pumps. As much as we don’t want to think about it, people (especially small children) can get pulled down and trapped by the strong suction of a drain.  Never allow anyone into a pool that doesn’t have up-to-date parts and maintained drains and pumps. Check the expiration date of these parts and replace them when it’s time to do so.

Even with all these measures in place, nothing can replace absolute vigilance when watching what goes on at the swimming pool. However, with proper swimming pool safety and etiquette, everyone can have a fun summer in and out of the pool.
